Weekuri Lake Sumba, NTT

Lake Weekuri is a saltwater lake located in Kalenarogo Village, North Kodi District, Southwest Sumba District, East Nusa Tenggara. Lake Weekuri is located about 60 kilometers from the district capital, Tambolaka.

The name Weekuri comes from the Sumba wee language which means water and kuri which means grated or splashed. Lake Weekuri is believed to be formed from seawater splashed through the reef so that it penetrates to the mainland. The lake is indeed surrounded by a rock that separates it by the sea. Local myth mentions that Weekuri is reputedly the name of a village that was drowned by the overflow of seawater.

Lake Weekuri shaped oval with a length of about 150 meters and width farthest 50 meters. The depth of the lake ranges from 30 cm to 2.5 meters at low tide but can reach five meters at sea tide.

GREAT coral rock stood firmly like a dock by the beach. Under the rock, sea water rumbles, in and out of the coral tunnel to Lake Weekuri in North Kodi, Southwest Sumba District.

Those who bathe in the lake were able to float in time long enough.

This is a saltwater lake. Salt levels are high enough that can float the tourists who bathe in the lake. The water is clear blue makes visitors so feel at home enjoying the panorama.

The journey to the lake is quite complicated. No signposts to the lake although Lake Weekuri has been known to the general public since 2010.

Roads can only be passed by one four-wheeled vehicles. The road was full of bushes.

From Tambolaka should only be taken 30 minutes. However, because the driver who took us to the lake had to find the asphalt road, we also had to turn westward, followed by a dense ground road, continue to turn east and go west again. The journey took two hours.

Every Saturday, Sunday and holiday, hundreds of people come to the lake to bathe, fish, relax, and enjoy the beauty of the lake and the surrounding natural scenery. In addition to those days, Weekuri is rarely visited, except for guests from outside who want to enjoy the charm of the lake.
